Summer Fugue<\/strong><\/p>\n

A good friend is a comfy jacket that matches<\/p>\n

all your favorite jeans. Or maybe a good friend<\/p>\n

is the carport where you park your beat-up VW.<\/p>\n

Calloused elbows rough to the touch, the scent<\/p>\n

of freshly squeezed lime, love as red and earthy<\/p>\n

as beets, the click of the lightbulb switching on,<\/p>\n

the first sip of sweet morning joe. I want to listen<\/p>\n

to how you touch my hand, to touch your voice<\/p>\n

with my fingertips. Like when Judith and I kicked<\/p>\n

around UTEP after the campus was closed to cars.<\/p>\n

Elbows no longer rough when rubbed with half<\/p>\n

a fresh lime. Lime puts me in mind of mojitos<\/p>\n

like the tall glasses we drank poolside in Coz.<\/p>\n

Dagnabbit, I should have grown spearmint this year!<\/p>\n

Because then we could go on a dive trip this winter.<\/p>\n

Women think they\u2019re our equals, bwahahahaha, <\/em><\/p>\n

I heard my brother-in-law say. The established laws of evolution<\/p>\n

will take care of him. I\u2019m thinking of the Neanderthals<\/p>\n

and the furry or scaled game they once hunted. Judith can<\/p>\n

take my BIL out with a quick round-house to the chin,<\/p>\n

if we can\u2019t wait for evolution to come save us. ConCon<\/p>\n

would be so happy for that. All of this will come true<\/p>\n

in six months, like the woolly mammoth who visits twice a year.<\/p>\n

Dinosaurs love my mom\u2019s chile con queso most of all.<\/p>\n
