On Taking Mom to the ER<\/span><\/p>\n

Bracing your elbow <\/span>
\nin the palm of my hand <\/span>
\nwe slip your favorite red jacket<\/span>
\nover your shoulders. <\/span>
\nThe tag says <\/span>
\nOuter Layer: Beet<\/span>
\nLining: Cinnomen<\/span><\/p>\n

You like to hear about that<\/span>
\neverytime.<\/span><\/p>\n

Winking up at Dad’s<\/span>
\nold elk head on the wall,<\/span>
\nyou assure Bokie <\/span>
\nwe’ll be right back.<\/span><\/p>\n

You like to do that everytime, too.<\/span><\/p>\n

Your sweet, soft, white hair tremors and shakes <\/span>
\nwith the rest of you <\/span>
\nas I place the blue bucket <\/span>
\non a black floor mat <\/span>
\nbetween your legs, <\/span>
\njust in case.<\/span><\/p>\n

You marvel at the beauty <\/span>
\nof sunrise on the bayou,<\/span>
\nlookin like the yellow parlor<\/span>
\nlightbulbs of your youth, <\/span>
\nas we back out of your carport <\/span>
\nfor the ER.<\/span><\/p>\n

I won’t tell you it’s 11pm.<\/span>
\nI won’t remind you that <\/span>
\nyou grew up in a two room <\/span>
\nshare cropper’s stilt house, <\/span>
\nother side o’the tracks.<\/span>
\nI won’t let you find out <\/span>
\nyou’ve never been to Louisiana.<\/span><\/p>\n
