Walking along the shore on summer Sunday afternoons,<\/p>\n
collecting rocks and shells, cooling our feet,<\/p>\n
you and I.<\/p>\n
I always wanted to walk behind you to fit my feet<\/p>\n
into your footprints<\/p>\n
before the waves came to take them away.<\/p>\n
My heart was always afraid a wave would come<\/p>\n
to take you away from me.<\/p>\n
You were strong and brave in my eyes.<\/p>\n
You believed in me and knew I could do great things.<\/p>\n
You helped me with my homework and got me past<\/p>\n
third grade math.<\/p>\n
You took the first story I ever wrote to work<\/p>\n
and shared it with everyone in the office.<\/p>\n
You took my first poem too.<\/p>\n
You knew I had a gift with words.<\/p>\n
One day the wave came<\/p>\n
to take you away from me.<\/p>\n
When things get hard for me,<\/p>\n
I write my words and<\/p>\n
remember you,<\/p>\n
whispering your name for strength:<\/p>\n
“Daddy.”<\/p>\n
