I could have lost you
\nso very many times.<\/p>\n
That long, dark corridor
\nclaimed your strength and salience;<\/p>\n
those vicious creatures
\nseeped into your aching spaces.<\/p>\n
You did your best to
\nempty your soul of them \u2013
\nwhen that didn\u2019t work
\nyou emptied your veins.<\/p>\n
The righteous rattle of
\nblack bottles merely kept you there \u2013
\nfading the glow of doorframes
\nand taking away the handles.<\/p>\n
Where could you go but away?<\/p>\n
And yet here you are! In health.
\nEven, (dare I say?) in happiness.<\/p>\n
I know the corridor calls you still
\nand the black bottles
\nare still sweetly on offer.<\/p>\n
Hear their call, dearest one.<\/p>\n
But, like sailors with
\nthe sirens of the sea,
\npass them by –<\/p>\n
for your earthly spends
