{"id":141212,"date":"2023-09-03T04:36:57","date_gmt":"2023-09-03T08:36:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thepoetrymarathon.com\/blog\/?p=141212"},"modified":"2023-09-03T04:36:57","modified_gmt":"2023-09-03T08:36:57","slug":"mmiw-pocahontas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thepoetrymarathon.com\/blog\/2023\/09\/mmiw-pocahontas\/","title":{"rendered":"MMIW: Pocahontas"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>MMIW: Pocahontas<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s another sad tale<\/p>\n<p>of an Indigenous girl<\/p>\n<p>stolen from her land<\/p>\n<p>and forced into marriage.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Many of you know of her<\/p>\n<p>from Disney\u2019s movie:<\/p>\n<p>Pocahontas.<\/p>\n<p>It displayed her as a proper age<\/p>\n<p>and was in love with John Smith.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I too was taken away by this fantasy<\/p>\n<p>that was fed to us.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I relearned her story in High School,<\/p>\n<p>where in History Class another Native girl<\/p>\n<p>did a report on Pocahontas.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>But the school project was not the entire truth.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In contrary to Disney,<\/p>\n<p>Pocahontas was only 11.<\/p>\n<p>A young girl, barely a young woman.<\/p>\n<p>She lived in fear of the settlers and soldiers,<\/p>\n<p>because rape was a popular sport.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>When John saw the young girl<\/p>\n<p>with long black hair<\/p>\n<p>running around with her friends.<\/p>\n<p>He wanted her.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>So, he took her at the age of 15.<\/p>\n<p>She was forced into marriage,<\/p>\n<p>was raped by men.<\/p>\n<p>All the while she saw her own husband murdered.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A broken soul, beaten and scorned,<\/p>\n<p>was forced into another marriage<\/p>\n<p>and was given an English name, Rebecca.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Like Sacagawea, she also died in her 20\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>Only to have her story romanticized and condensed.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; MMIW: Pocahontas &nbsp; Here\u2019s another sad tale of an Indigenous girl stolen from her land and forced into marriage. &nbsp; Many of you know of her from Disney\u2019s movie: Pocahontas.
