Running into an old friend at the local coffee house,<\/p>\n
we exchanged updates, what the kids are doing,<\/p>\n
the old man’s work and music, jobs, and housing.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
“Do you run any more?”<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Marathons, half marathons, 10-k’s, 5-k’s, mud runs, fun runs,<\/p>\n
I used to do them all, just because I could.<\/p>\n
My knees held out, but my ankles caved from soccer, and<\/p>\n
then I turned to a low-impact lifestyle.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
“No, I stopped running a while back. I teach yoga now.”<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
And we chatted about the studio, my writing, teaching, volunteering,<\/p>\n
return to school–only 100 hours left for my practicum–and the dogs,<\/p>\n
cat, travels, certifications, and businesses.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
“Wow! You’re so busy.<\/p>\n
Even back then, you coached soccer, volunteered at school,<\/p>\n
headed the art program, managed two club teams, ran a law office and<\/p>\n
two kids to soccer games\u00a0up and down the coast.<\/p>\n
And then, didn’t you take your parents in?”<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
“I did. They lived with me for ten years before they died.”<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
And now, just the two of us, the cat, the dogs, and my ten jobs, in a two-bedroom<\/p>\n
above my yoga studio, one of three businesses I run…<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Busy-ness, so my therapists say, is a symptom of trauma.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
I guess I’m still running.<\/p>\n
