That’s the thing about love though,
\nisn’t it?
\nLove comes back, and no matter
\nhow you bite and snip:
\nlove comes, love lingers.
\nIt lets you climb out of your shell.
\nAnd one day that canary flew –
\nit flew so far away,
\nso fast and so wild,
\nand it sang the whole time.
\nAnd all the cruelty that had burdened it,
\nall those harsh hands –
\nthey were gone.
\nBut the gentle hands found the canary again,
\nand the canary learned
\nit had always sung,
\nhad always flown,
\nhad always had everything it ever needed,
\neven though it was ripped away.<\/p>\n
And it stilled eats black-ink-stained vellum flowers sometimes,
\nthe hunger for words unable to escape it,
\nbut it eats birdseed too,
\nand it sings,
\nand it flies with a flock.
\nAnd that’s love –
\nthat’s the canary –
