{"id":18824,"date":"2016-08-13T11:04:46","date_gmt":"2016-08-13T15:04:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thepoetrymarathon.com\/blog\/?p=18824"},"modified":"2016-08-13T11:06:37","modified_gmt":"2016-08-13T15:06:37","slug":"8am-city-girl","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thepoetrymarathon.com\/blog\/2016\/08\/8am-city-girl\/","title":{"rendered":"8am &#8211; City Girl"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sparkling creek and untainted air<\/p>\n<p>Rocks rise underfeet<\/p>\n<p>Civilization momentarily left behind<\/p>\n<p>As mountains rise up on either side.<\/p>\n<p>Sunlight warms to make heavy the air<\/p>\n<p>Until the breeze tears<\/p>\n<p>Through above the icy water<\/p>\n<p>If you breathe\u00a0deeply enough, it will make you alive.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>City girl,<\/p>\n<p>Lulled to sleep by nature&#8217;s song<\/p>\n<p>Her soft sounds, her apparent drowsiness<\/p>\n<p>As the waters tumble and leaves flutter.<\/p>\n<p>There is much more noise in the city,<\/p>\n<p>Constant stimulation,<\/p>\n<p>Hustle and bustle and Tweets and the daily offence<\/p>\n<p>With every turn of your head.<\/p>\n<p>The voice of the city is shallow,<\/p>\n<p>and shallowly we respond to it,<\/p>\n<p>With unthought words and hollow feelings<\/p>\n<p>And poses on our screens.<\/p>\n<p>No wonder nature makes the city girl drowsy:<\/p>\n<p>She is so used to hustle and bustle,<\/p>\n<p>To things happening, happening in her face.<\/p>\n<p>But in nature, she must look.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>As deep calls out to deep,<\/p>\n<p>So calls the voice of<\/p>\n<p>The earth, the air, the rocks, the trees<\/p>\n<p>To the deep she has inside and has forgotten how to hear.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>City girl sits on the rocks<\/p>\n<p>Turns one over in her hands,<\/p>\n<p>Rough edges sensitizing smooth fingers.<\/p>\n<p>Slowly the relative silence of nature<\/p>\n<p>Clears the muddied shallows of the waters of her mind.<\/p>\n<p>She stands<\/p>\n<p>Touches the leaf of an aspen on the banks<\/p>\n<p>Watches in her soul\u00a0as it becomes alive,<\/p>\n<p>Breathing sunlight,<\/p>\n<p>Raising bark and branch and heartwood<\/p>\n<p>High above her head<\/p>\n<p>Into the limitless, living sky.<\/p>\n<p>Sparkling creek and untainted air,<\/p>\n<p>Rocks rising underfeet,<\/p>\n<p>She breathes,<\/p>\n<p>And connects in her heart to the deep.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sparkling creek and untainted air Rocks rise underfeet Civilization momentarily left behind As mountains rise up on either side.
