asking for change<\/p>\n
pennies off the ground<\/p>\n
nickels, quarters, dimes<\/p>\n
pan handling is her life’s domain<\/p>\n
she approaches my car<\/p>\n
at first glance is my rejection<\/p>\n
as she disembarks from my path<\/p>\n
i drive away<\/p>\n
my consciousness rules me and I surrender<\/p>\n
i circle the block<\/p>\n
reach inside my car’s console<\/p>\n
and become a part of her hunt for treasure<\/p>\n
like a scavenger I find 3 quarters<\/p>\n
2 dimes and a nickel<\/p>\n
i dare not insult her with pennies<\/p>\n
as she reaches inside to take what I have given<\/p>\n
her nails graze the palm of my hand ever so slightly<\/p>\n
“you got any dollars, baby?” “i’m just trying to buy a hotdog.”<\/p>\n
