I drank the sky,
\nopened my mouth
\nwide,
\nmy teeth flashing, cameralike,
\nin the sun.
\nI meant to stutter an excuse,
\noffer an apology,
\nsing the praises of someone
\nnot me,
\nbut something fuzzy and cool,
\nlike gossamer
\nor lavender cotton candy,
\nspun inside.<\/p>\n
Well, what was I to do?
\nEyes wide and guilty,
\nI swallowed.<\/p>\n
It was delicious,
\nI don\u2019t mind saying:
\nSoft and spiky,
\nbitter and so sweet
\nmy lips puckered
\nand my tongue perspired.
\nMy empty tummy,
\nheretofore wrapped
\nlike an undelivered present,
\nunfurled, stretched,
\ngurgled a message
\nto my fretful brain:
\n\u201cMore.\u201d<\/p>\n
I didn\u2019t know what else to do,
\nso I kept my lips unsealed.
\nThe heavens poured inside,
\nbulging my cheeks,
\nkissing my throat,
\nrounding my belly.
\nI\u2019m pretty\u00a0sure
\na satellite, thundercloud,
\nperhaps a star or two
\ntumbled in.
\nThey tasted hot and bright,
\nlike metal against my teeth.<\/p>\n
My face shifted upward,
\neyes shining, mouth open
\nin a hungry song.
\nWords spun, colliding,
\nforming sentences and heat.
\nI\u2019m confident I glowed.<\/p>\n
So you see,
\nthe fat orange sun
\nand its nursemaid clouds
\nlive in me now,
\nrounding out my body,
\nfilling me with thunder
\nand starlight.<\/p>\n
I tell you only because you wondered
\nWhat happened to the sky.<\/p>\n
Stars snagged in my teeth,
\nClouds distended my belly
\nAs I sipped the sky.<\/p>\n
