I<br \/>\nwas a hawk searching out possible prey, an errant feather sliding<br \/>\nsideways on slipping air currents, irresistibly drawn to the fall,<br \/>\nseeing myself stepping over the edge\u00a0and imagining the flying<br \/>\nfreedom,\u00a0a second-hand thrill, never to be enacted.<\/p>\n<p>Later, when torn in tiny pieces\u00a0and unable to pull together,<br \/>\nrecalling childhood abuse, the death of my child,\u00a0an<br \/>\nimploding marriage,\u00a0clinical depression sank in its<br \/>\nclaws\u00a0and what had formerly thrilled\u00a0then filled<br \/>\nme with terror, and there were no more<br \/>\nbalconies for me.\u00a0I took no mountain<br \/>\nhikes, my feet stayed firmly on<br \/>\nthe ground,\u00a0 for I knew\u00a0if I<br \/>\ndared to step up to<br \/>\nthe abyss\u00a0I would<br \/>\nat long last see<br \/>\nwhat it really<br \/>\nmeant to<br \/>\nfinally<br \/>\nfreely<br \/>\nfall.<\/p>\n<p>Tracy Plath<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Peering Into the Abyss When I was\u00a0happy I\u00a0loved high places, balconies and rooftops gave a secret thrill, the Grand Canyon was an exquisite torment, a frisson of\u00a0thrilling danger grazed my nerves as I gazed\u00a0over the edge.
