The comfort of a bed
\nThe warmth of a blanket
\nClean water
\nHot food
\nShelter from the elements
\nSave from that of surprise
\nImagine mine, when I found myself out here
\nWhere the pavement and the mattress are of the same cloth
\nDouble woven asphalt with a hint of Goodyear
\nNow when momma said, “Don’t you go off and do nothin’ stupid.”
\nMaybe I should have asked her to be more specific
\nAnd maybe not sound quite so insipid
\nMaybe I’d have been more vigilant
\nAnd not so quick to make with the first one I came across
\nI won’t say it was anyone’s folly, not at all
\nYet, there’s a certain sense of injustice
\nOne I cannot shake
\nFor all attempts and purposes
\nThis world has no break
\nTo give or have or even get
\nSomeone is almost always out for just them
\nUnhappy, and unsatisfied
\nEven all is what they got
\nYet I am here
\nIn this place
\nOf concrete and asphalt
\nScraping for just enough to get by
\nAll the while feeling the wind
\nOf the elite getting ahead<\/p>\n
I’ll not be judgmental of those above
\nThey paved their ways in the way they knew of
\nWhile I, of lesser mind, wiled away my time
\nOn life and happiness and being free
\nOf choosing between their life and mine
\nSure it’s not the upper tier
\nI may not be accepted in the upper echelon
\nNor viewed to be redeemable by my own kin
\nI know I have purpose and worth
\nA lesson, perhaps
\nMaybe a cautionary word
\nTake what you may from these lines I have writ
\nEverything costs something
