Great Expectations<\/p>\n

The yearning for green things, growing things,
\nfruits and flowers, begins in the deep and dark of winter.
\nSavvy garden magazines know this, tease and taunt
\nin gorgeous, full color photo spreads, the perfection
\nI can expect for our yard if I buy, buy, buy.<\/p>\n

I fall for it, eagerly await the arrival of tender sprigs,
\nbare woody roots, and naked seeds to gently space,
\nimmerse, water, and watch. Into the early summer
\nthey flourish, growth and weight added, springing
\nheight upwards, buds beginning to take shape.<\/p>\n

Summer in the desert tells its own stark truth, stalks
\nbecoming sere and dry, flowers reaching early seed,
\nvegetables requiring emergency shelter to survive.
\nThe flagstones become covered with creeping,\u00a0patchy
\nthorns, the only true green that of the sprawling weeds.<\/p>\n

They force their way through the minutest of cracks, but
\nI will continue to dream the winter dream, insanely hoping
\nfor different results, hoping for the green of spring, only
\nto awaken to summer’s reality: the\u00a0brutally shoving, grasping,
\ndesert weeds, cracking\u00a0man-made containers we hope to fill.<\/p>\n
