The Will of Nature<\/em><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

I\u2019m lucky \u2013<\/p>\n

I get to explain<\/p>\n

to angst ridden teens<\/p>\n

how<\/p>\n

trees grow on mountain sides.<\/p>\n

And<\/p>\n

most of the time<\/p>\n

they buy it<\/p>\n

but,<\/p>\n

once in a while,<\/p>\n

one of those kids<\/p>\n

scoffs at the will<\/p>\n

of<\/p>\n

Nature.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Yeah,<\/p>\n

this makes no sense<\/p>\n

cuz<\/p>\n

science is<\/p>\n

irrefutable<\/p>\n

and stuff<\/p>\n

so<\/p>\n

what is the problem?!<\/p>\n

Sceptics would say<\/p>\n

that you can\u2019t get<\/p>\n

dirt from a stone<\/p>\n

cuz<\/p>\n

it\u2019s rock \u2013<\/p>\n

it\u2019s hard\u2026duh!?<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I can always<\/p>\n

count on<\/p>\n

the kids in the back<\/p>\n

cuz<\/p>\n

they know this all too well:<\/p>\n

all it takes<\/p>\n

is a<\/p>\n

little crack<\/p>\n

so the light can get in.<\/p>\n

The lichens break<\/p>\n

rock<\/p>\n

into dirt<\/p>\n

so<\/p>\n

the birds can \u201cdeliver\u201d<\/p>\n

(complete with air quotes)<\/p>\n

the seeds.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

So,<\/p>\n

heathen teens,<\/p>\n

that\u2019s the story<\/p>\n

of how<\/p>\n

the smallest plants<\/p>\n

crack the<\/p>\n

toughest stone.<\/p>\n

Now go and try it \u2013<\/p>\n

buy the principal a coffee.<\/p>\n
