bides time until ground thaws<\/p>\n
when steel-toed boots again kick<\/p>\n
shiny broad shovels, scraping stones.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Passed soldiers rest decades<\/p>\n
beneath grey shadowed granite,<\/p>\n
brothers and lovers and children,<\/p>\n
frozen, waiting for company.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
This green spring morning welcomes<\/p>\n
fractured hearts for their goodbyes,<\/p>\n
folded Stars and Stripes, corners true,<\/p>\n
as tendered gift must be enough.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Sorrow gathers, words retreat, fertile<\/p>\n
moist earth, tossed to a son,<\/p>\n
knocks on coffin’s door,<\/p>\n
as distant bugle keens farewell.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Pages are turned to find a place in line.<\/p>\n
Black ink scribes his last poem.<\/p>\n
Worn cover closes, paper settles<\/p>\n
