From childhood through adolescence,
\nI struggled with academics daily.
\nIn elementary school, I remember
\nwanting to learn but not knowing how.
\nIn high school, I wanted to engage
\nin literary, rational discussions,
\nbut I didn’t know how;
\nnobody had ever taught me how.
\nI had no skills and knew no strategies.
\nI learned those terms while teaching.
\nIn college, I’d stay quiet to prevent
\nhumiliation by teachers and students.
\nI wasn’t happy being a silent student;
\nI’d always been rather outspoken.
\nI chose to speak and speak against
\ninjustices I saw around me everyday.
\nThe worst injustices happened during
\nmy teaching career, on site.
\nEventually these injustices at work
\nand neighborhood led to a massive stroke.
\nThe stroke caused brain damage,
\nbut in my tradition as a fighter,
\nI survived the stroke and soon
\nwent back to graduate school to resume
\nand complete a Master’s degree.
\nI also started publishing my writing.
\nI realized that if I could go back to school
\nand succeed, although not easy, after a stroke,
\nit meant I’d always been pretty smart;
\nI just didn’t realize it, and nobody had told me either.
\nI also learned some high school classmates
\nsaw me as the ‘smart’ one.
\nNow I know for sure I’m smart, but I wonder
\nhow much more I’d have accomplished
\nhad I known since childhood how smart
\nI have always been. <\/p>\n
