When I came to California, a gruff New Yorker,<\/p>\n
well nigh 38 years plus change ago,<\/p>\n
the first time I heard, “Have a nice day!” from<\/p>\n
a super market clerk after I had purchased<\/p>\n
a loaf of bread, a jar of peanut butter and milk,<\/p>\n
I thought to myself, “What the actual fuck?!”<\/p>\n
I had no idea what she was up to or what she meant.<\/p>\n
And then I heard it everywhere, “Have a nice day,”<\/p>\n
said the ice cream store clerk and the sandwich shop<\/p>\n
cashier and even the gas station attendant.<\/p>\n
I thought I had landed on some spooky, sticky planet<\/p>\n
of gooey good cheer, totally fake and reflexive.<\/p>\n
So now, much more accustomed to the saying,<\/p>\n
as common as “Where should we go to eat? Or<\/p>\n
did you finish your homework?”, I jokingly reply,<\/p>\n
“Don’t tell me what to do! I have authority issues,” and<\/p>\n
