I was led to the gallows<\/span><\/p>\n

Gruffly, by indifferent men<\/span><\/p>\n

Who’d learned not to feel.<\/span><\/p>\n

They pushed me forward,<\/span><\/p>\n

So that I would climb the steps.<\/span><\/p>\n

When I reached the top,<\/span><\/p>\n

The hangman looked into my eyes.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHow are you?\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cPardon me,\u201d I beseeched.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cExcuse me,\u201d he said, <\/span><\/p>\n

As he slipped the cover over my head,<\/span><\/p>\n

Then the noose,<\/span><\/p>\n

Adding, \u201cThank you.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cPardon me,\u201d I implored,<\/span><\/p>\n

Though he was not a lawman.<\/span><\/p>\n

And his last words, which came after mine,<\/span><\/p>\n

Which I heard as darkness became light,<\/span><\/p>\n
