Filled with Reader’s Digest Condensed Books<\/p>\n
And odd books by authors<\/p>\n
long forgotten<\/p>\n
The window box overlooked the railroad tracks<\/p>\n
My favorite place<\/p>\n
To read or watch the endless streams of trains<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
The ceiling bowed with the roof<\/p>\n
Making the room look more octagonal<\/p>\n
than square<\/p>\n
I can smell the must<\/p>\n
The dust even now<\/p>\n
I can see the pine trees and the neighbors walk<\/p>\n
Their heads jumping above the hedge<\/p>\n

The deck was too public<\/p>\n
Reaching beyond the tiny apartment<\/p>\n
Too many people said hello<\/p>\n
But I could sit<\/p>\n
On the window box<\/p>\n
Unnoticed.<\/p>\n
It was sanctuary<\/p>\n
Long gone after Grandma’s death<\/p>\n
I would dream of the room often<\/p>\n
The bed that slid into the wall<\/p>\n
The pull down desk that hung by gold chains<\/p>\n
Filled with cubbie holes to rifle through<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
The angled closets throughout<\/p>\n
Odd containers of a life lived inside<\/p>\n
Memories and keepsakes<\/p>\n
The small black and white TV that barely had reception<\/p>\n
The couch, scratchy and pinkish<\/p>\n
That folded magically into a bed<\/p>\n
A small two top table<\/p>\n
And a kitchen, overlooking the deck<\/p>\n
My first bachelor pad at 12<\/p>\n
When I spent the summer alone with them<\/p>\n
My first apartment<\/p>\n
My first dream of independence<\/p>\n
A field trip into adulthood<\/p>\n
Under the careful eyes of my grandparents below<\/p>\n
