Down the path and into sunlight,<\/span><\/p>\n

And suddenly you are on show<\/span><\/p>\n

To everyone already swimming.<\/span><\/p>\n

Down the grassy path to a bank of muddy sand,<\/span><\/p>\n

A few people at a time <\/span><\/p>\n

Always leave their shoes, shorts, and shirts here.<\/span><\/p>\n

Some cross the river, passing by the rocks<\/span><\/p>\n

Jutting from the water’s surface,<\/span><\/p>\n

Picking their way across a sand and stony bottom,<\/span><\/p>\n

Sometimes slipping, sometimes swimming,<\/span><\/p>\n

Arriving on the other side,<\/span><\/p>\n

Rising, dripping.<\/span><\/p>\n

The sand is tan and dusty and hot.<\/span><\/p>\n

Some stack stones for occupation,<\/span><\/p>\n

Others talk,<\/span><\/p>\n

Some build lean-tos to sit under,<\/span><\/p>\n

Or use ones left behind.<\/span><\/p>\n

Young children run and chase on the sand,<\/span><\/p>\n

Older children jump daringly from rocks into the water.<\/span><\/p>\n

Both shatter the river stillness with the sounds of their play.<\/span><\/p>\n

And now and then, the summer buzz of a horsefly or two.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
