She plays concert piano by ear
\nAnd drives an MG.
\nShe is hopelessly in love,
\nWith a young man whom even his friends
\nCall a stodgy old man.<\/p>\n
They are both 18.
\nAnd then they are 20.<\/p>\n
Three<\/p>\n
An expected marriage
\nTwo families join
\nAnd within four years
\nThere are three more.<\/p>\n
Four<\/p>\n
The heartbreak
\nTakes her and her three
\nTo a land far away
\nFrom the life they had known.<\/p>\n
Five<\/p>\n
The MG and the piano
\nHave been replaced by a sedan and typewriter
\nHer happiness has become
\nThe happiness of her children<\/p>\n
Six<\/p>\n
A sailor a pirate
\nTakes them on an adventure
\nTo a magical land of mountians and wet, green forests
\nBut just for awhile.<\/p>\n
Seven<\/p>\n
She returns to the South
\nHer children in tow
\nBack to her roots
\nAnd back to her family.<\/p>\n
Eight<\/p>\n
One by one, the birds leave the nest
\nBut still she worries over them
\nand cries for their tragedies
\nAnd laughs for their triumphs<\/p>\n
Nine<\/p>\n
In the twilight come more
\nTwo girls and four boys
\nAnd lots of dogs and one cat
\nAll of them her grandchildren
\nAll are celebrations of her life.<\/p>\n
Ten<\/p>\n
All of the children of her life
\nAre who they are because of her.
\nAnd for her, this is her life’s fulfillment
\nThe joy she feels for the sacrifices she she made,
\nFor her, it has been worth it.<\/p>\n
