{"id":32427,"date":"2017-08-05T10:40:22","date_gmt":"2017-08-05T14:40:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thepoetrymarathon.com\/blog\/?p=32427"},"modified":"2017-08-05T10:40:22","modified_gmt":"2017-08-05T14:40:22","slug":"talents-and-desires","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thepoetrymarathon.com\/blog\/2017\/08\/talents-and-desires\/","title":{"rendered":"Talents and Desires"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When God gave out the talents,<\/p>\n<p>no one really cared,<\/p>\n<p>for then we were <em>one<\/em> people<\/p>\n<p>and everything was shared.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>When God dispensed desires,<\/p>\n<p>all fell into dust.<\/p>\n<p>Everyone had different wants,<\/p>\n<p>and we forgot to trust.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>And while this holy act<\/p>\n<p>brought trials to us all,<\/p>\n<p>I have a certain grievance<\/p>\n<p>that I would like to call.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>My talents are a pleasure,<\/p>\n<p>I like them quite a bit:<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m smart, I learn nonstop<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t want to pitch a fit&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>But my desires just don&#8217;t match<\/p>\n<p>the talents that God gave.<\/p>\n<p>The things that I can do, you see,<\/p>\n<p>are not the things I crave.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Music! Song! to sing aloud<\/p>\n<p>with the power of the sea!<\/p>\n<p>Yet I open up my mouth<\/p>\n<p>and a squalling whine crawls free.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps, I think, my pipes won&#8217;t do,<\/p>\n<p>but thunder I <em>will <\/em>bring.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ll just use an instrument<\/p>\n<p>if my voice won&#8217;t sing.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Alas, my friend, &#8217;tis all for naught,<\/p>\n<p>piano, strings, or flute.<\/p>\n<p>I miss a beat or fingers slip,<\/p>\n<p>and, once again, I&#8217;m mute.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>So, God on High, if you can hear<\/p>\n<p>this flimsy little rhyme,<\/p>\n<p>Gift me with a voice like rain!<\/p>\n<p>It wouldn&#8217;t cost a dime.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>My songbird&#8217;s heart is not content<\/p>\n<p>confined by vocal folds.<\/p>\n<p>It needs to fly, release the songs<\/p>\n<p>and brightness that it holds.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When God gave out the talents, no one really cared, for then we were one people and everything was shared. &nbsp; When God dispensed desires, all fell into dust.
