{"id":33146,"date":"2017-08-05T11:47:08","date_gmt":"2017-08-05T15:47:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thepoetrymarathon.com\/blog\/?p=33146"},"modified":"2017-08-05T11:47:08","modified_gmt":"2017-08-05T15:47:08","slug":"chronicle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thepoetrymarathon.com\/blog\/2017\/08\/chronicle\/","title":{"rendered":"Chronicle"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><u>Day 1<\/u><br \/>\nA warm summer day,<br \/>\nLuxurious sunlight we haven\u2019t seen in weeks.<br \/>\nBloor bustling with limbs and faces and trays of sample iced tea.<br \/>\nTurn on to Runnymede and keep going.<\/p>\n<p>Step into the doctor\u2019s office<br \/>\n(Really a house)<br \/>\n(Really the basement of a house)<br \/>\nSuch is the state of things.<\/p>\n<p>The basement<br \/>\n<em>Office <\/em><br \/>\nSorry,<br \/>\nThe office is dark.<br \/>\nWhich is an odd touch for the purpose.<\/p>\n<p>Set the scene:<br \/>\nThe long couch, one end curling like a ram&#8217;s horn, where your head is supposed to lay.<br \/>\nAnd the impassive authority on the chair opposite.<br \/>\nThe impassive authority of whom the previous has praised as the ultimate.<br \/>\nTo whom the government offers the people\u2019s taxes<br \/>\nBecause he is educated and knowledgable.<br \/>\nSitting.<br \/>\n<em>Feel free to get comfortable<\/em>.<br \/>\nI am sitting in a dark basement.<br \/>\n<em>OFFICE.<\/em><br \/>\nOffice.<br \/>\nI can hear his roommate above us.<br \/>\nHe crosses his legs.<br \/>\nHe places his head in the palm of his hand.<br \/>\nHe stays like that.<br \/>\nThe clock ticks and the hour passes<br \/>\nAnd he stays like that, we stay like that,<br \/>\nSilent,<br \/>\nUntil the hour ends and<br \/>\n\u201cThat\u2019s all the time we have for today.\u201d<br \/>\n<u><br \/>\nDay 2<\/u><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong>Again, I sit.<br \/>\nAgain, he sits.<br \/>\nHead in his hands.<\/p>\n<p>Where did you study? <em><br \/>\nYou\u2019re supposed to be doing the talking.<br \/>\n<\/em>How can I offer<br \/>\nThe pain in my heart,<br \/>\nLord supreme of smothering silence,<br \/>\nTo a stranger?<br \/>\n(Albeit one with a medical degree,<br \/>\nFramed and stamped on the wall behind him).<br \/>\nI despair<br \/>\nAs the hour passes<br \/>\nAnd he looks up from his silent self-caress to note<br \/>\n\u201cThat\u2019s all the time we have for today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><u>Day 4<\/u><br \/>\nMore of the same.<br \/>\nSalutations, silence, and<br \/>\n\u201cThat\u2019s all the time we ha-\u201c<\/p>\n<p><u>Day 7<\/u><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><em>I suppose our therapeutic style will be silence<br \/>\n<\/em>Go fuck yourself, old man.<\/p>\n<p><u>Day 9<\/u><br \/>\nIf this is the ultimate authority,<br \/>\nI am doomed.<\/p>\n<p><u>Day 11<\/u><br \/>\nA family member passes.<br \/>\nI call in to report.<\/p>\n<p><u>Day 20<\/u><br \/>\nBefore resuming his position, he hands me a paper.<br \/>\n<em>Your bill for the previous session<\/em><br \/>\nI called in.<br \/>\n<em>You were under the impression that was sufficient? <\/em><br \/>\nYes.<br \/>\n<em>Well, that is unfortunate. <\/em><br \/>\nI cannot afford this.<br \/>\n<em>That is similarly unfortunate.<br \/>\n<\/em><br \/>\n<u>Day 26<\/u><br \/>\nI enter the basement<br \/>\n<em>Office <\/em><br \/>\nFuck off.<br \/>\nI enter the basement.<\/p>\n<p>I do not think this is working well for me. I will not continue.<br \/>\n<em>Do you want to know what I think?<br \/>\n<\/em>Of course.<br \/>\n<em>I think you\u2019re a troubled woman who will require years of extensive<br \/>\ntherapy.<br \/>\n<\/em>Wonderful.
