{"id":33325,"date":"2017-08-05T12:04:00","date_gmt":"2017-08-05T16:04:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thepoetrymarathon.com\/blog\/?p=33325"},"modified":"2017-08-05T12:04:00","modified_gmt":"2017-08-05T16:04:00","slug":"abandon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thepoetrymarathon.com\/blog\/2017\/08\/abandon\/","title":{"rendered":"Abandon"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It was abandoned long before we,<br \/>\nages twelve, eleven, nine<br \/>\ngathered enough courage to<br \/>\nwalk through its open doorway<\/p>\n<p>some roof remained, sunlight freely<br \/>\nilluminated what remained<br \/>\nkitchen counter, enameled sink<br \/>\nweathered, cracked-wood table, chairs<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-33364\" src=\"https:\/\/thepoetrymarathon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/facade-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"416\" height=\"277\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thepoetrymarathon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/facade-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/thepoetrymarathon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/facade-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/thepoetrymarathon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/facade-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/thepoetrymarathon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/facade-480x320.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 416px) 100vw, 416px\" \/><br \/>\none corner, mostly untouched by<br \/>\nweather, time \u2013 stacks of small boxes<br \/>\ncardboard, wood, filled with<br \/>\nimaginary treasures of young minds<\/p>\n<p>reality revealed only documents,<br \/>\nold newspapers, black-and-white photos<br \/>\nlacking any compelling narrative<br \/>\nwe ignored the documentation, the<\/p>\n<p>remnants of a life \u2013 lives? \u2013 abruptly,<br \/>\nhaphazardly abandoned to time, nature<br \/>\nthere was some history to be told, surely<br \/>\nsome memories someone had to have<br \/>\nsomeone unknown to us had made<br \/>\nsomeone disposed of by neglect, default<\/p>\n<p>the land where the house sat, owned<br \/>\nby a local family, who had let it sit, full of<br \/>\nwhat was once someone\u2019s life, let nature<br \/>\nbegin to reclaim it without obstruction<\/p>\n<p>I wonder now, decades removed from<br \/>\nignorance of adolescent archeology<br \/>\nif someone, somewhere, ever wonders<br \/>\nwhatever happened to\u2026.whomever it was<br \/>\nthat once lived, once left, an old house<br \/>\nin the woods, those few of us brave enough<br \/>\nto pshaw thoughts of ghosts, might have been<br \/>\nthe last to ever give comfort to same.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u2013 Mark L.
