Grandma’s twig<\/p>\n
Grandma planted a twig<\/p>\n
She pushed it into the rich<\/p>\n
Black soil and directed us<\/p>\n
All to let it grow, to be careful<\/p>\n
Not to mow it over<\/p>\n
To everyone’s surprise it rooted<\/p>\n
And began to grow<\/p>\n
When she died<\/p>\n
Thirty years ago<\/p>\n
it was a scrawny thing<\/p>\n
Barely shading anything.<\/p>\n
Last week my cousins and<\/p>\n
I met the people who bought<\/p>\n
The house. They took us<\/p>\n
Through and then into the yard<\/p>\n
We gasped when we saw the<\/p>\n
Tree. Now a thick trunk<\/p>\n
Supporting an umbrella of<\/p>\n
Close-growing leaves,<\/p>\n
Perfect shade for picnics<\/p>\n
–Grandma’s dream for our<\/p>\n
Together ness.<\/p>\n
“My grandchildren have parties with their dolls there the lady<\/p>\n
Told us.<\/p>\n
We smiled. The tree had served<\/p>\n
Its purpose, and so had grandma’s love<\/p>\n
We were too old for back yard teatime picnics<\/p>\n
But we three were still close cousins<\/p>\n
