{"id":34857,"date":"2017-08-05T14:26:59","date_gmt":"2017-08-05T18:26:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thepoetrymarathon.com\/blog\/?p=34857"},"modified":"2017-08-05T15:28:36","modified_gmt":"2017-08-05T19:28:36","slug":"hour-6-yall","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thepoetrymarathon.com\/blog\/2017\/08\/hour-6-yall\/","title":{"rendered":"hour 6: y&#8217;all"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>They never used the word sacrifice,<br \/>\nthey always used the words a better life.<\/p>\n<p>On the first journey,<br \/>\nI dropped the name that granted me wisdom<br \/>\nand the brightness of the sun and moon<br \/>\nfor something equal in syllables<br \/>\nbut meaningless in worth.<\/p>\n<p>On the second journey,<br \/>\nI dropped the new words I had just mastered.<br \/>\nGave up freeways for highways<br \/>\nand you guys for y\u2019all.<br \/>\nIt wasn\u2019t enough to rip out my tongue<br \/>\na second time<br \/>\nfor y\u2019all to see me as human.<\/p>\n<p>Y\u2019all wanted me to unflatten my nose.<br \/>\nOpen my eyes.<br \/>\nStarve<br \/>\nthan to use chopsticks.<br \/>\nPoke my eyes out with them<br \/>\ninstead.<\/p>\n<p>Y\u2019all\u2019s problem<br \/>\nbecame my problem.<br \/>\nI should never have taken that load,<br \/>\nI should\u2019ve thrown it off the side of the Appalachian mountain range<br \/>\nand hoped for it to crush y\u2019all<br \/>\non its way down<br \/>\nrather than let y\u2019all crush me.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>They never used the word sacrifice, they always used the words a better life.
