{"id":35287,"date":"2017-08-05T15:29:04","date_gmt":"2017-08-05T19:29:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thepoetrymarathon.com\/blog\/?p=35287"},"modified":"2017-08-05T15:29:04","modified_gmt":"2017-08-05T19:29:04","slug":"from-inside-out-7","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thepoetrymarathon.com\/blog\/2017\/08\/from-inside-out-7\/","title":{"rendered":"from inside, out &#8211; #7"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I chose this tagline for my weekly writing project<br \/>\nin Vermont for its duality &#8211;\u00a0<em>bringing incarcerated women&#8217;s words<br \/>\nfrom inside, out &#8211; <\/em>and intentional \u00a0layers of meaning.<\/p>\n<p>Over the eight years of practice, we have indeed<br \/>\nbrought many words out, words that have spilled<br \/>\nonto fast-written pages and found their way<\/p>\n<p>into our weekly blog, into our quarterly anthologies,<br \/>\neven into our more widely-read published book.<br \/>\nWords that have told of pain and confusion,<\/p>\n<p>of betrayal and loss; of children not seen since birth<br \/>\ntaken by distant relatives, by unfit fathers, by the state;<br \/>\nof losing battles with serious addiction and of winning<\/p>\n<p>the right to freedom &#8211; WITH all kinds of restrictions<br \/>\nand caveats and requirements that would put most of us<br \/>\nunder such pressure, we would cave before starting.<\/p>\n<p>And yet I have witnessed wonderful women<br \/>\npull themselves through the pile of paperwork,<br \/>\nthe stupefaction of stigma, the challenges of chaos<\/p>\n<p>to return home, rebuild a sense of self,\u00a0find work,<br \/>\nand even in the face of all odds,\u00a0honor their inner pledge<br \/>\nto become whole again &#8211; f<em>rom inside, out.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>swb<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I chose this tagline for my weekly writing project in Vermont for its duality &#8211;\u00a0bringing incarcerated women&#8217;s words from inside, out &#8211; and intentional \u00a0layers of meaning.
