the name my father chose<\/p>\n
against my mother\u2019s wishes.<\/p>\n
But what\u2019s in a name? Don\u2019t you see<\/p>\n
how exhausted I\u2019ve become by the world\u2019s insistence on labels:<\/p>\n
bi-polar, half-breed, addict, refugee, wife, mother, child.<\/p>\n
I am all of these and more.<\/p>\n
I am the forest Orpheus planted when he returned whetted<\/p>\n
and alone from the underworld. I am the Thracian woman<\/p>\n
who hacked off his head and hung it singing in a tree.<\/p>\n
I am the robin who built a nest out of grass and hair<\/p>\n
in its branches. Don\u2019t you see<\/p>\n
I never wanted to be born, my birth certificate<\/p>\n
a yellowed piece of paper fraying along the folds<\/p>\n
and stamped with a swastika, a black spider<\/p>\n
spinning a web in my head. I\u2019ve seen it<\/p>\n
crawl across the bed, but am afraid to kill it,<\/p>\n
to squash it with oppression’s heel.<\/p>\n
