{"id":36062,"date":"2017-08-05T16:30:46","date_gmt":"2017-08-05T20:30:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thepoetrymarathon.com\/blog\/?p=36062"},"modified":"2017-08-07T04:29:52","modified_gmt":"2017-08-07T08:29:52","slug":"8-books","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thepoetrymarathon.com\/blog\/2017\/08\/8-books\/","title":{"rendered":"8: Books"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Harvard undergrads<br \/>\nused to read books<br \/>\non the Red Line train.<\/p>\n<p>How many eyes nowadays<br \/>\nscan print and paper?<br \/>\nVirtually none.<\/p>\n<p>*<\/p>\n<p>Luddite,<br \/>\nI\u2019ll still carry<br \/>\nthree or four paperbacks<br \/>\nin my tote bag,<br \/>\nthe poor man\u2019s Kindle.<\/p>\n<p>*<\/p>\n<p>When I was sixteen,<br \/>\nI hid a copy<br \/>\nof <em>The Colossus<\/em><br \/>\nin my jacket pocket<br \/>\nat Steve &amp; Cory\u2019s wedding.<\/p>\n<p>Thirty years have passed<br \/>\nsince I bought my first volumes of verse:<br \/>\nEliot\u2019s <em>Four Quartets<\/em>,<br \/>\nRimbaud\u2019s <em>Illuminations<\/em>,<br \/>\nHeaney\u2019s <em>Field Work<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Eliot because it was cheap,<br \/>\nRimbaud because it was French,<br \/>\nHeaney because Mr Waldron<br \/>\nsaid he was good.<\/p>\n<p>The printed page<br \/>\nis bread to me,<br \/>\nlife and light,<br \/>\nshelter and sustenance.<\/p>\n<p>*<\/p>\n<p>Sure, I\u2019m as guilty<br \/>\nas the next guy<br \/>\nof checking the iPhone<br \/>\nduring a dull commute.<\/p>\n<p>But there are times<br \/>\nat home alone<br \/>\nI\u2019ll pick up a book,<br \/>\nan old favorite,<br \/>\nweathered, seasoned,<br \/>\nand pace from room to room<br \/>\nreading aloud<br \/>\nto the four walls,<br \/>\nto any muse or angel<br \/>\nthat might be haunting me.<\/p>\n<p>*<\/p>\n<p>Wystan, Estlin, Theodore, Marianne,<br \/>\nyou wouldn\u2019t be the same<br \/>\nas lucent type on a small screen.<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019re most at home<br \/>\nin dead-tree editions!<\/p>\n<p>I lift your pages<br \/>\nand kiss the verses<br \/>\nas the priest<br \/>\nkisses the Gospel.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Harvard undergrads used to read books on the Red Line train.
