{"id":37223,"date":"2017-08-05T18:21:54","date_gmt":"2017-08-05T22:21:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thepoetrymarathon.com\/blog\/?p=37223"},"modified":"2017-08-05T18:21:54","modified_gmt":"2017-08-05T22:21:54","slug":"poem-10-black-animals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thepoetrymarathon.com\/blog\/2017\/08\/poem-10-black-animals\/","title":{"rendered":"Poem 10: Black Animals"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>My favorite animals are the black ones:<br \/>\nSleek.<br \/>\nLight gleams off muscles and rolls<br \/>\nlike someone smeared their<br \/>\nprecious hides with Vaseline.<br \/>\nFur so shiny we can see into the<br \/>\nsmarmy depths of our own prejudices.<br \/>\nAn honest, onyx mirror,<br \/>\ncurving like the darkest sky<br \/>\nfrom which the moon bites<br \/>\ncrescent chunks.<\/p>\n<p>The black ones know us,<br \/>\nsee our rejection of our own<br \/>\ndark spots.<br \/>\nStill, they rub against us,<br \/>\nleaving tinsel-dark threads<br \/>\nthat stitch together our<br \/>\nphilosophical treastises and<br \/>\nethnocentrism.<\/p>\n<p>When the sooty skies singe the heavens<br \/>\nand the stars have closed their winking eyes,<br \/>\nthey watch us,<br \/>\nour shadows on lightless nights.<br \/>\nThey see what we do,<br \/>\nsmell what we know.<br \/>\nAnd when the sun finally rises,<br \/>\nthey remain there, at our feet,<br \/>\nblack pupils promising<br \/>\nforgiveness.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>My favorite animals are the black ones: Sleek.
