We lived off Prospect.
\nIt was my father’s first house purchase;

Only through overhearing my mother
\ntell this do I recall
\nhaving my hair dressed
\nby the neighbors
\ndown the street.<\/p>\n
She was looking for me.
\nHours earlier, I had gone to play with a friend.
\nA car came to the front of the house and out I was delivered,
\nmy hair in cornrows.<\/p>\n
She told my father, who
\nmoved us to a homogeneous backwater,
\nwhere I watched my mother as a touchstone
\nof how\/how not to behave.<\/p>\n
If only all of the above could have happened within
\nthe last few years, with Internet, viral video, etc,
\nI might have
\ngrown up with a mother
