Ancestors<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
This morning I asked Colleen,<\/p>\n
“How do you write a poem?”<\/p>\n
“Look it up online,” she said,<\/p>\n
“Or ask Siri.”<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
I guess I’ll give it a try.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
I remember when I felt so small<\/p>\n
that everything around me was big.<\/p>\n
I had to duck from the avalanche.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Their was no choice but to see the<\/p>\n
future as a movie and passively watch.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
I had no idea that a shell<\/p>\n
surrounded me.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
There were moments<\/p>\n
when I pecked through to<\/p>\n
rays of light that helped<\/p>\n
wake me from sleep.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
And some guides<\/p>\n
came along the way.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Yet in time<\/p>\n
I had to choose.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Maybe some choices that came before me<\/p>\n
were my ancestors pecking through my veins<\/p>\n
and telling me to find exuberance.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Because they never had that choice.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
