to the Mermaid in a stall<\/p>\n
The man in the checkered suit<\/p>\n
waves his gloved hands at the tent<\/p>\n
last chance to see<\/p>\n
a bit of remaining wonder<\/p>\n
a con that only the guileless believed<\/p>\n
but we went anyway,<\/p>\n
spending our meager cents<\/p>\n
for a moment with a woman<\/p>\n
who all pretended to be<\/p>\n
more than a woman<\/p>\n
we needed to believe in something<\/p>\n
more than the cars on the road,<\/p>\n
the orbs of light on the streets,<\/p>\n
and the skyscrapers growing into the sky<\/p>\n
we needed a moment that recalled<\/p>\n
when humanity lived in fear of the dark,<\/p>\n
and knocked wood to keep the fairies away.<\/p>\n
Electricity exposed the outlines of our magic<\/p>\n
We still need the dark.<\/p>\n
