{"id":40065,"date":"2017-08-06T00:45:03","date_gmt":"2017-08-06T04:45:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thepoetrymarathon.com\/blog\/?p=40065"},"modified":"2017-08-06T00:45:03","modified_gmt":"2017-08-06T04:45:03","slug":"are-you-ok","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thepoetrymarathon.com\/blog\/2017\/08\/are-you-ok\/","title":{"rendered":"Are You Ok?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Big parking lots make me feel so lonely.<\/p>\n<p>So far from the street, so far from the sidewalk,<br \/>\nso far from the bus stop.<\/p>\n<p>Tethered to nothing but the errand,<br \/>\nI walk to my destination,<br \/>\ncertain of the possibility of being apprehended<br \/>\nfor breaking an unknown law.<\/p>\n<p>Quaint 1950s America wouldn&#8217;t make me<br \/>\nwalk the expanse of a football field<br \/>\nto buy milk, bread and razors.<\/p>\n<p>I remember the walks<br \/>\nfrom my grandmother&#8217;s house<br \/>\nto the Safeway.<\/p>\n<p>Armed with my grandmother&#8217;s<br \/>\nshakily written list, with prices in the margin,<br \/>\nI soldiered down the street<br \/>\nand through a lot<br \/>\nbehind a bar<br \/>\ncalled the Pyle In.<\/p>\n<p>On one trip,<br \/>\nI walked half a block before I encountered<br \/>\na man lying on the sidewalk in my path.<br \/>\nHe stirred.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Are you ok,&#8221; I asked.<\/p>\n<p>Rubbing his eyes, he said, &#8220;What&#8217;s ok?&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>We both knew here was nothing else to say.<br \/>\nI continued to the store,<br \/>\nsaying nothing to my grandmother<br \/>\nwhen I returned.<\/p>\n<p>To this day, I can think of a dozen responses<br \/>\nin  answer to a child&#8217;s &#8220;Are you ok?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>But, the parking lots are so big,<br \/>\nwhy would there ever be a need?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Big parking lots make me feel so lonely.
