{"id":40120,"date":"2017-08-06T00:23:23","date_gmt":"2017-08-06T04:23:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thepoetrymarathon.com\/blog\/?p=40120"},"modified":"2017-08-06T00:23:23","modified_gmt":"2017-08-06T04:23:23","slug":"antonia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thepoetrymarathon.com\/blog\/2017\/08\/antonia\/","title":{"rendered":"Antonia"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1501988539737_2996\">\n<p>Life is not fair, for those who<\/p>\n<p>come from the old country.<\/p>\n<p>I can barely remember my father<\/p>\n<p>but they say he was a fine musician,<\/p>\n<p>a beautifully accomplished violinist.<\/p>\n<p>Somehow he ended up in the barn,<\/p>\n<p>at 3 a.m., where he played one last<\/p>\n<p>strain of the \u201cAve Maria,\u201d then put<\/p>\n<p>his shotgun at his feet, where he<\/p>\n<p>could operate the trigger with his<\/p>\n<p>big toe, and BAM! he was gone.<\/p>\n<p>They buried him at the crossroads<\/p>\n<p>because suicides are not allowed<\/p>\n<p>in the Catholic cemetery. My mother<\/p>\n<p>and brothers did the best they could.<\/p>\n<p>I tried to help them, becoming a<\/p>\n<p>hired girl to one of the best families<\/p>\n<p>in town. I thought the man who made<\/p>\n<p>promises to marry me would help my<\/p>\n<p>family, but he only made me pregnant<\/p>\n<p>and left me, all alone in Omaha. This<\/p>\n<p>good man, my husband, has given me<\/p>\n<p>thirteen children, fourteen all together.<\/p>\n<p>He raised my first child as his own, like<\/p>\n<p>Joseph in the manger. All are in the book,<\/p>\n<p>Leo the most famous. They called me Toni<\/p>\n<p>in real life, but my literary name has more<\/p>\n<p>pizazz than her book that won the Pulitzer Prize.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Life is not fair, for those who come from the old country.
