It is, sadly, the true story of my life, and how my losses are so small.<\/p>\n<h1>Why Me?<\/h1>\n<p>The question I never asked,<br \/>\nwhen diagnosed Type 1<br \/>\nwhen the vending machine arrived<br \/>\nhooking me on the sweet stuff.<\/p>\n<p>As one eye's loss<br \/>\nkilled my perception of depth,<br \/>\ndepositing me on my arse<br \/>\nlooking back at sidewalk kerbs.<\/p>\n<p>When the right eye followed suit<br \/>\nand kidney failure ensued,<br \/>\nand immunosupressant drugs<br \/>\nlet brain lymphoma in.<\/p>\n<p>Why me did not apply,<br \/>\nuntil lymphoma finished off Emily at age 19,<br \/>\nleukemia my classmate, Chris, age 14<br \/>\nwhen I finally asked, \u201cWhy me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Why the fuck am I still here,<br \/>\nwhy are they not?<br \/>\nmy trials essentially self-inflicted<br \/>\ntheirs most certainly not.<\/p>\n<p>I made cancer look<br \/>\nlike beating it was a stroll in the park,<br \/>\nI would have given anything,<br \/>\nto be in their place.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve been pondering writing something like this as a prose piece, but there&#8217;s no reason it can&#8217;t work as a poem.
