Creation Mythology

Long time past,
\nbefore the Big Bang myth scattered the stars
\nand send cooling balls of matter to become
\nplanets and moons
\nand the myth of evolution populated
\nthe water planet named dirt upon which we live.<\/p>\n
Long time past
\nBefore Galileo set the Earth dirt spinning around our Sun,
\nbefore Arab and Egyptian scholars mapped the distant stars.<\/p>\n
That time,
\nEverybody lived on a flat dirt planet surrounded by water on every side.
\nSome water fell out of the sky, some was down below.
\nThe Sun and Moon behaved themselves and flowed across the sky
\neach day and night.<\/p>\n
That time,
\nthere were many stories to explain Everything.
\nOur planet was a bid of bird poop on a tortoise shell.
\nThe Sun a ball the trickster Raven stole from Bear
\nand threw up high in the sky to keep from being caught.<\/p>\n
Mountain tops had names and histories,
\nRivers flowed from the homes of powerful beings known as gods.
\nThe stories made a kind of sensible nonsense that taught us
\nnot to ask too many questions lest we anger spirits that were listening.<\/p>\n
The problems came when Raven and Bear and the magical beings and spirits
\ngot promoted into full fledged gods
\nthat demanded worship, sacrifices, loyalty as a price for rain and good crops.
\nPretty soon every nation, tribe and watering hole had its resident god or godling.
\nSome of them weren\u2019t up to the job.
\nThey demanded too much and gave too little.
\nThey ruled by fear and punished with flood, famine and plague.
\nIt was untenable.<\/p>\n
Then some bright Charlie or Charlene came up with the bright idea
\nthat religion and gods could be good.
\nPretty soon people were meditating or telling stories about how to have a better life.<\/p>\n
Now there were franchises in which Creation was made on purpose
\nout of love for all that is and kindness for people, who are special.
\nThe earth was still flat and the sun reassuringly went around us,
\nand everything could be explained.
\nIt was written down in big books.<\/p>\n
Now great thinkers stand astride the Creator myth and the Bang,
\nstriving to make them work as a team and lead humanity in a good direction.
\nBut the trickster is still at work and we are still confused.<\/p>\n
That is a sketch of the many mythical stories of creation as we know it and have known it.
\nMay we find salvation in the truth, if we ever figure it out.<\/p>\n
And that\u2019s the Truth, whatever that is.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
