To most folks, I’m quite some combination;
\nMallory or Marlowe – take your pick.
\nI worked for the DA once but then he chose to let me go.
\nNow I’m a full-time private dick.
\nMen have a tendency to look at me up and down and sigh;
\nWomen just stare – then walk away.
\nI’m sometimes available for poetic dialogues
\nBut chess? No thanks. In my book that’s a solitary play.
\nI take my coffee with cream in the mornings.
\nIt’s black as tar every other time.
\nIf you’re partial to some whisky or some brandy
\nSomething tells me we’ll get along just fine.
\nI often take the measure of loneliness
\non empty city streets or long dark nights;
\nAt other times I’m chasing hoodlums
\nOr muscling in on petty bar-room fights.
\nI’m not quite sure what age I am
\nAnything from 38 to 42.
