{"id":41189,"date":"2017-08-06T04:54:40","date_gmt":"2017-08-06T08:54:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thepoetrymarathon.com\/blog\/?p=41189"},"modified":"2021-06-26T11:32:18","modified_gmt":"2021-06-26T15:32:18","slug":"breakfast-with-hades","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thepoetrymarathon.com\/blog\/2017\/08\/breakfast-with-hades\/","title":{"rendered":"Breakfast with Hades (2017)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>7:30 am.<br \/>\nSomething must be wrong.<br \/>\nThis is so out of character,<br \/>\nAgainst routine.<br \/>\nShe enters the restaurant<br \/>\nAnd greets the hostess.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Table for two,&#8221; she tells her<br \/>\n&#8220;My party should be here soon.&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;Oh,&#8221; the hostess remarks<br \/>\n&#8220;Do you mean that gentleman?&#8221;<br \/>\nShe follows her gaze.<br \/>\nSure enough, there he is.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Thank you,&#8221; she says<br \/>\nAnd hurries over to the table.<br \/>\nHe&#8217;s on time for once?<br \/>\nWhat in the world?<br \/>\nSomething had to be wrong,<br \/>\nIt was the only explanation<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Ah, you made it!&#8221; He stands.<br \/>\nMotioning for her to sit<br \/>\n&#8220;You say it as though I am late.&#8221;<br \/>\nHe laughs.<br \/>\n&#8220;Considering I was here first<br \/>\nI would say that you are.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>She lets out a short breath<br \/>\n&#8220;On the contrary,&#8221; she says<br \/>\n&#8220;You are on time<br \/>\nOr else you were early.&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;But you said it yourself<br \/>\nI am always late.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Which is why I&#8217;m concerned.&#8221;<br \/>\nShe stares at him.<br \/>\n&#8220;Would you like to order something?&#8221;<br \/>\nHe asks as he waves to a waiter.<br \/>\n&#8220;You must try their waffles<br \/>\nThey are next to godly.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>She is losing her patience.<br \/>\n&#8220;No, I do not want waffles.<br \/>\nI don&#8217;t want food, I don&#8217;t want a drink.<br \/>\nStop beating around the bush.&#8221;<br \/>\nShe folds her arms<br \/>\nAwaiting his explanation<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Hold the waffles,&#8221; he tells the waiter,<br \/>\nThen looks at her, all business.<br \/>\n&#8220;It is time for our regular meeting.<br \/>\nI presume you have something for me?<br \/>\nOr perhaps you have nothing at all.<br \/>\nThat would be a refreshing change.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our meetings are always at 10:00 sharp.<br \/>\nWe meet at the same place every time.<br \/>\nI always wait for you<br \/>\nand when you show up you always get<br \/>\nthat ridiculous coffee.<br \/>\nNow, what is going on?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I decided to change things up a bit.<br \/>\nDon&#8217;t you like it?&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;Change it up?<br \/>\nI am not convinced.&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;My dear, I am a god.<br \/>\nI <em>can<\/em> and <em>will<\/em> do as I please.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>They stare each other down.<br \/>\nHe isn&#8217;t going to give in.<br \/>\nBut she can see it in his eyes.<br \/>\nThere is a reason for this change<br \/>\n&#8220;Fine,&#8221; she said, resigned.<br \/>\nHe smiles and gives a nod<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Now, what do you have for me?&#8221;<br \/>\nShe removes the files from her bag<br \/>\nThe stack seems larger than last time<br \/>\n&#8220;Quite a &#8216;haul&#8217; this time around.<br \/>\nI&#8217;m sure you will be pleased.&#8221;<br \/>\nHe scowls.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Is there a problem?&#8221; he asks<br \/>\n&#8220;Do you have something you would like to say?&#8221;<br \/>\nShe considers the possibility<br \/>\nAnd thinks better of it<br \/>\n&#8220;Not at all.<br \/>\nJust making an observation.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He puts his chin in his hands<br \/>\nResting elbows on the table<br \/>\n&#8220;You don&#8217;t like me. You despise me.<br \/>\nIn fact, I daresay you actually <em>hate<\/em> me.&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;Isn&#8217;t that what mortals do?&#8221; she retorts.<br \/>\n&#8220;We hate the gods and the feeling is mutual.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We do not hate mortals.<br \/>\nNot all of us at least.<br \/>\nAnd I am highly offended<br \/>\nYou would so easily assume that.&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;I don&#8217;t care about offending you, sir.<br \/>\nAnd my <em>assumption<\/em> is based on fact.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Yes, because history always tells the truth.<br \/>\nYour history books say the gods are a myth<br \/>\nYet somehow you have found yourself<br \/>\nEmployed by one.&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;Not my best job choice, I will admit<br \/>\nBut it does&#8211;somehow&#8211;pay the bills.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He straightens.<br \/>\n&#8220;I am not the evil monster you make me out to be.&#8221;<br \/>\nOnce again he leaves without explanation,<br \/>\nEver a mystery to be solved.<br \/>\nSometimes it really pisses her off.<br \/>\nBut today, it&#8217;s different<\/p>\n<p>She can&#8217;t help wondering<br \/>\nWhat has gotten into him lately?<br \/>\nWhat is this sudden escalation<br \/>\nOf caring and sentimentality?<br \/>\nShe continues to sit alone,<br \/>\nPondering it all.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>7:30 am.
