{"id":42941,"date":"2017-08-06T08:14:49","date_gmt":"2017-08-06T12:14:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thepoetrymarathon.com\/blog\/?p=42941"},"modified":"2017-08-06T08:14:49","modified_gmt":"2017-08-06T12:14:49","slug":"outside-my-window-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thepoetrymarathon.com\/blog\/2017\/08\/outside-my-window-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Outside My Window"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Though the shades are closed, vertical blinds obscuring the view,<br \/>\nI well know what lies behind them.<br \/>\nOut there, in my yard, lives<br \/>\nA grand Valencia orange tree 35 years old or more<br \/>\nThat branches from the house to wall in a triangular<br \/>\nPatch of dirt amidst the concrete.<br \/>\nAnd kitty corner is the tangerine tree, frailer than her<br \/>\nCompanion citrus tree but her fruit is sweeter.<br \/>\nShe\u2019s younger than her cousin.<br \/>\nIn the southwestern corner of the yard are the rose bushes<br \/>\nOne tall white rosed tree and one red sickly<br \/>\nShe may suffer disease or rot, maybe bugs<br \/>\nAnd in the corner in the deep recess of abutting walls<br \/>\nReigns the queen ficus, wild, unruly, with bursting roots<br \/>\nUprooting everything in her way, concrete, cinder, and earth.<br \/>\nShe buries bird nests and Edison wires within her bushy hair<br \/>\nAlong the wall between the tangerine and lemon tree<br \/>\nLive a tangle of tomato plants, beefsteaks, cherries, and romas<br \/>\nOverrun nearly, by champagne grape vines grown over<br \/>\nAnd under my window, sentries to the morning, two small trees<br \/>\nThat bloom pink peonies, peppering green leaves.<br \/>\nBeneath them, in the cool dirt, lies the Husky pup, Goosey Loose.<br \/>\nWho\u2019ll soon lift herself on sleepy legs to crawl through<br \/>\nThe doggie door, pause at the entryway before hopping into bed with me.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Though the shades are closed, vertical blinds obscuring the view, I well know what lies behind them.
