{"id":43070,"date":"2017-08-06T08:29:57","date_gmt":"2017-08-06T12:29:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thepoetrymarathon.com\/blog\/?p=43070"},"modified":"2017-08-06T08:31:17","modified_gmt":"2017-08-06T12:31:17","slug":"424-submission","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thepoetrymarathon.com\/blog\/2017\/08\/424-submission\/","title":{"rendered":"(#4\/24): \u201cSubmission\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>\u201cA body at rest, stays at rest \u2026\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I fall asleep waiting for you.<\/p>\n<p>Against my fear, but I am just so, so tired.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201c\u2026 Unless a force exerts itself, \u2026\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>You wake me up with one wrench of my hair,<\/p>\n<p>And a backhand across my face.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201c\u2026 While a body in motion, stays in motion \u2026\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I scramble to get up without a word,<\/p>\n<p>Trying to show no sign of impertinence, or pain.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201c\u2026 Until a force exerts itself.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I rush to get your cold plates to the microwave,<\/p>\n<p>Until your ankle trip, and I meet gravity,<\/p>\n<p>And all is still.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cIf force is mass x acceleration, then the greater the mass of the object being accelerated, the greater the force required.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I disagree with Newton here.<\/p>\n<p>For the slightest motion of your wrist,<\/p>\n<p>Makes me flinch, and jump, and react, immediately.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cFor every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I try to push my bulk off the linoleum<\/p>\n<p>With all the strength I can muster,<\/p>\n<p>As you laugh at my agony.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cGravity is the force that pulls objects together, and the further the distance between objects, the smaller that force.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>If fear compels me to stay with you,<\/p>\n<p>Would not running away reduce that fear?<\/p>\n<p>And yet, it is that fear<\/p>\n<p>Which keeps me hostage.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I have not finished high school,<\/p>\n<p>But I know these Laws of Motion and Gravity<\/p>\n<p>All so well.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I am numb to the pain,<\/p>\n<p>Impervious to the humiliation,<\/p>\n<p>And resigned to the indignity of my life with you.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00a9 2017 S Phua<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>(Author\u2019s note: Apologies for taking liberties with Newton\u2019s Laws.)<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cA body at rest, stays at rest \u2026\u201d.
