\u00a0,into the night.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u00a0I doze dreaming of deer jumping into the road\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
with each jerk of the wheel as the man\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
and Bill share a hazardous smoke. \u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Delivered to a park we thank him as he drives\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
on and we set up camp in a town we don’t know. \u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
A welcomed shower long warm leaving pools of\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
grime and threats of a pixie cut as each strand\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
of hair wrapped around another.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Two hours of brushing and another at dawn<\/span><\/div>\n
Tears dried with kisses and layers of<\/span><\/div>\n
Previously needed sun screen put on<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
East to Missouri with a traveling salesman<\/div>\n
Wanting company drops us intersecting two interstates<\/div>\n
Hitching not allowed, time to walk<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Map check and decision to walk to the highway<\/div>\n
But heat beyond expectations and even<\/div>\n
With water the physical demands and too much and I pass out<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Revived and tired return to interstate to walk to text exit<\/div>\n
And an uninvited ride in a Cadillac Seville<\/div>\n
Hold your packs in the\u00a0backseat on your lap and groceries is in the trunk<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Exit two more down, pass the golf course<\/div>\n
Down a long drive to a mansion white and three car garage<\/div>\n
We pull right in nose in to the washing machine and deep freezer<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Hoping that’s not where we will end up<\/div>\n
Call your families take a swim<\/div>\n
Make an iced tea with seltzer water<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Conversation and cocktails, BBQed burgers\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
Call to son who goes to Bemidji for summer hockey camps<\/span><\/div>\n
Call to the corporate jet but it’s busy<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
So we exchange contact information\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
Get a ride to a campground at sunset<\/span><\/div>\n
And have stories to tell about the World Trade Center banker<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Another restful night just a few more home<\/span><\/div>\n
From Missouri we hear more tales of those\u00a0missing<\/div>\n
Disappeared and presumed dead on the radio<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Two three four cars pass as we walk thumbs out<\/div>\n
Finally a low slung black beater pulls to side<\/div>\n
We run, throw our bags in the trunk, hop in the back<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Three man-boys loud tunes and smoke<\/div>\n
Exhaust pipe fumes making us nauseated<\/div>\n
Jokes about those disappeared and smokes shared<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Across another state nearly done<\/div>\n
Sargent in sargent buys us lunch at the counter<\/span><\/div>\n
Been here longer than dirt missing his wife<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Quiet plains turn dark and still<\/span><\/div>\n
Sirens blow and we watch as cyclone<\/span><\/div>\n
Twirls above and does the Kansas waltz<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Returning home wrung out worn out<\/div>\n
And thrilled to tell these thumbed tales<\/div>\n
