PART ONE \u2013 The Trip<\/pre>\n<\/p>\n
We left early; station wagon packed<\/p>\n
There was always a bucket<\/p>\n
Placed where I could find it quickly<\/p>\n
Usually I\u2019d make it to Circleville, usually<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
I hated the trip, smooshed against my siblings<\/p>\n
All of us dreading 90 minutes of fights, and farts<\/p>\n
And pulling over to get rid of my breakfast<\/p>\n
Good ole bucket to the rescue<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
I hated Chillicothe, curvy Route 35<\/p>\n
If I hadn\u2019t used \u201cbuckety\u201d by now<\/p>\n
It wouldn\u2019t be long<\/p>\n
Or maybe someone would need to pee.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
But soon there\u2019d be hills<\/p>\n
Hills full of trees, and deer<\/p>\n
And memories of the last trip<\/p>\n
And anticipation of what soon could be<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
I saw it, just ahead, the ball diamond<\/p>\n
You know, the one with the green fencing<\/p>\n
A diamond in the oddest of places<\/p>\n
But it was a landmark to us\u2026. we\u2019re almost there!!<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
The road turned to gravel<\/p>\n
Under the canopy of the trees<\/p>\n
It wouldn\u2019t be long now<\/p>\n
Just a few more turns.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
There was one last hurdle<\/p>\n
Getting past that curve with the narrow berm<\/p>\n
So very far down it seemed<\/p>\n
I was certain I would die there<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
But not today<\/p>\n
Today I would attend a reunion<\/p>\n
Who will greet us?<\/p>\n
When we spill out of the car<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Engine off, seat belts off<\/p>\n
Doors open and legs finally stretched<\/p>\n
The trip was over<\/p>\n
