{"id":47871,"date":"2019-06-22T11:34:18","date_gmt":"2019-06-22T15:34:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thepoetrymarathon.com\/blog\/?p=47871"},"modified":"2019-06-22T21:12:53","modified_gmt":"2019-06-23T01:12:53","slug":"senior-week-trip","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thepoetrymarathon.com\/blog\/2019\/06\/senior-week-trip\/","title":{"rendered":"Senior Week Trip"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I haven&#8217;t been to the beach in a very long time.<br \/>\nMy mother says the waves make her<br \/>\nnauseous- sorry, nauseated<br \/>\n(My mother&#8217;s an English major).<\/p>\n<p>Last week, I went to the beach.<br \/>\nI hated the sand.<br \/>\nI hated the sun (sunscreen<br \/>\nevery 15 minutes for this<br \/>\nuntoasted marshmallow skin).<br \/>\nI hated the wind tangling my hair.<br \/>\nI hated the salt water spilling<br \/>\nwithout my permission<br \/>\npast my lips, and teeth, and tongue.<\/p>\n<p>I liked watching the waves.<br \/>\nWhile my friends napped on towels<br \/>\nor laughed in the roiling sea,<br \/>\nI felt my eyes forever pinned on the waves.<br \/>\nThe water pulls and tugs at itself,<br \/>\nfolds and bends and crinkles.<br \/>\nIt builds itself into towers that,<br \/>\nlike Babylon, must fall.<br \/>\nThey tumble in so many droplets<br \/>\nstill a single wall of water.<br \/>\nIt crashes against the surface,<br \/>\na blow shattering both victim and fist.<br \/>\nIt rolls across the ocean surface,<br \/>\nsplitting, reforming, colliding.<br \/>\nThe wave turns to so many smaller<br \/>\nbubbling crests that race one another<br \/>\nacross the shallow shore.<br \/>\nThey trip and surge and stumble,<br \/>\nsmoothing into a a sheet over the sand,<br \/>\na calm caress of water against my toes<br \/>\nbefore the next skyscraper, already plummeting,<br \/>\nsucks it back for the dramatic impact,<br \/>\nthe collision of earth and sea<br \/>\nand sky<br \/>\nbecause everywhere is sky.<\/p>\n<p>I know why the Greeks thought horses sprang from the surf.<br \/>\nWhat else could breed such stampeding graceful power?<\/p>\n<p>The tide came for our towels, and we left.<br \/>\nOur bags full of sand,<br \/>\nmy feet scratched from constant abrasion,<br \/>\nfeeling sticky and grainy all over.<br \/>\nI would have rather gone camping.<br \/>\nBut I liked watching the waves.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I haven&#8217;t been to the beach in a very long time.
