though it gives in to the sun; distant<\/p>\n
traffic a muffled presence as breeze rises<\/p>\n
above in the silence of dogs .<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
A lone seagull calls above the inland twitter;<\/p>\n
a neighbor speaks, a lone car passes by –<\/p>\n
ordinary moments of a weekend day<\/p>\n
business as usual in a quiet city enclave.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
But I feel what is missing, struggle to recall<\/p>\n
the lurch of your uneven gait beside me;<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
prefer to recall you striding up Sunset Ridge<\/p>\n
as I scramble to catch up, perch on the bridge<\/p>\n
sharing gorp and water laughing as the dog<\/p>\n
drink-swims the icy stream\u2026<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Looking around, I see your absence<\/p>\n
and my not-yet-coming-to-terms<\/p>\n
that our plans are no longer; yet<\/p>\n
I go on. I return from my walk<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
deadhead the Nova Zemla rhodie by the door,<\/p>\n
snip a newly-blooming peony for the house<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
enter the silence I have just left to find it<\/p>\n
alive with sun, comfort of the familiar<\/p>\n
and your gentle presence warm<\/p>\n
in my heart.<\/p>\n
