{"id":48210,"date":"2019-06-22T12:41:20","date_gmt":"2019-06-22T16:41:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thepoetrymarathon.com\/blog\/?p=48210"},"modified":"2019-06-22T12:41:20","modified_gmt":"2019-06-22T16:41:20","slug":"chicken-philosophy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thepoetrymarathon.com\/blog\/2019\/06\/chicken-philosophy\/","title":{"rendered":"Chicken Philosophy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>All life is sacred<br \/>\nMaybe some is more sacred than others.<br \/>\nThe life of the deer is not sacred to the wolf.<br \/>\nNor the corn, to the deer.<\/p>\n<p>And nothing is sacred to a fucking chicken.<\/p>\n<p>Slurp a worm from the earth,<br \/>\nSnatch a fly from the air,<br \/>\nRip a seed from a pod,<br \/>\nBite Charlotte from her web.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s all just &#8220;FOOD&#8221; to a hen.<\/p>\n<p>Some chickens lay eggs, yes.<br \/>\nOthers drive their beaks into them<br \/>\nto sup on the yellow goodness within.<br \/>\nOr whatever else they find.<\/p>\n<p>All life is sacred, until you&#8217;re hungry enough.<\/p>\n<p>Chickens are social animals.<br \/>\nAnd they welcome each other<br \/>\nby trying to break the necks of new hens.<br \/>\nIf you&#8217;re too big to kill, you&#8217;re in.<\/p>\n<p>All life is sacred, unless you&#8217;re too weak to keep it.<\/p>\n<p>When a chicken dies, it stresses the flock.<br \/>\nBut that doesn&#8217;t stop them from pecking.<br \/>\nThe eyes and flesh of their fallen comrade<br \/>\nA snack for the survivors.<br \/>\nEven with a bounty of grains, they&#8217;ll sample the dead.<\/p>\n<p>All life is sacred, but what&#8217;s left behind is just meat.<\/p>\n<p>Roosters are cowards and rapists,<br \/>\non top of being braggarts.<br \/>\nThey&#8217;ll work their harems into featherless misery<br \/>\nDefending them only from rival roosters.<br \/>\nWhen predators near<br \/>\nproud cocks can be found<br \/>\nhiding under piles of their brides.<\/p>\n<p>All life is sacred, and none is more sacred than our own.<\/p>\n<p>Keeping too many roosters is a cruelty.<br \/>\nTo hen and farmer and other roosters alike.<br \/>\nNature makes far too many of them<br \/>\nFor any farm or flock to keep.<br \/>\nCulling is a pretty word.<br \/>\nExsanguination is lovely.<br \/>\nThey both mean death.<br \/>\nWhich means quiet, and peace, and health<br \/>\nThat life would have denied.<\/p>\n<p>Death, too, is sacred.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>All life is sacred Maybe some is more sacred than others.
