These roads were horse tracks once, I hear;
\ncurving slowly into the rising hill
\neasing the passage of harvest-heavy carts
\nhauled by teams of horses to each farm –
\ntheir sweating heads low, necks taut,
\nas their hooves spat sound – ice-sharp –
\ninto a darkening sky. <\/p>\n
I\u2019m told that highwaymen roamed here too;
\ntheir cache remaining in the fields above the farm.
\nSo when I walk these shadowed roads in winter
\nand the moon is all I have,
\nmy thoughts are now of silver:
\nthe cool wash of moonlight across a sour and empty hedge,
\neyes gleaming, wet with fear, at this dark interruption;
