The color is almost<br \/>\ncream. Almost yellow. Warped<br \/>\nwooden floors spread<br \/>\nhardened pulled caramel, pulled taffy.<br \/>\nThe stained glass window stares onto the street<br \/>\nhigher than anyone can reach. Cobalt and<br \/>\ncadmium red and yellow orange azo<br \/>\nin a perfect lead-lined circle twelve feet up. <\/p>\n<p><em>Could it have worked? Us? <\/em><\/p>\n<p>White and cobalt tile in the kitchen.<br \/>\nPlastic bat lowered on fishing line<br \/>\nspinning, facing an iron barred window. Two<br \/>\nsquirrels stare in through more lead-lined glass. <\/p>\n<p><em>How much lead was in that place?<br \/>\nHow much lead in me? <\/em><\/p>\n<p>Window half open onto the fire escape.<br \/>\nTwenty-four inches to save a life. Scrappy<br \/>\norange striped tom comes and goes. Habanero<br \/>\nis his own cat. The fire escape<br \/>\nis for smoking and confrontation. <\/p>\n<p><em>How is he? How is he? <\/em><\/p>\n<p>Half a slanted closet waist high<br \/>\nis meant for liquor and board games. Some books.<br \/>\nSome sheets. Enough space to hide a grown man<br \/>\nlike the crease of an overpass. Lead painted<br \/>\nwooden door. Lead paint flakes<br \/>\noff in layers. The door is more paint<br \/>\nthan wood. More lead than wood. <\/p>\n<p><em>I\u2019m sweating the lead out. I\u2019m sweating<br \/>\nyou out.
