{"id":49958,"date":"2019-06-22T15:41:39","date_gmt":"2019-06-22T19:41:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thepoetrymarathon.com\/blog\/?p=49958"},"modified":"2019-06-22T15:41:39","modified_gmt":"2019-06-22T19:41:39","slug":"autumn-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thepoetrymarathon.com\/blog\/2019\/06\/autumn-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Autumn"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Leaves fall, as do Empires, in the fullness of time.<\/p>\n<p>They say she wasn&#8217;t built in a day,<br \/>\nbut Rome took generations to fall.<\/p>\n<p>Will we?<\/p>\n<p>In the fading dusk of democracy,<br \/>\nwe are driven to panic by demagogues.<br \/>\nAn empire, a lifestyle, built on finite resources,<br \/>\npolicies built on deferral of consequence.<br \/>\nFractured consensus, identities of animosity,<br \/>\nA groggy center holding, barely.<\/p>\n<p>A revolution sounds dandy,<br \/>\nbut a civil war is no place for innocent,<br \/>\nand if you think the other side will cede<br \/>\nwithout blood in the streets,<br \/>\nhistory has hard lessons for you.<\/p>\n<p>Leaves fall, like lives spent in the service of empire or idealism.<\/p>\n<p>But leaves grow back.<\/p>\n<p>Luxuries our ancestors would have named magic,<br \/>\nenvenoming landfills and clogging the oceans.<br \/>\nDesertification, rising floodwaters, resurgent diseases<br \/>\nspread on winds far warmer than nature provides<br \/>\noutside of an asteroid or pyroclasm.<\/p>\n<p>We are an extinction level event<br \/>\non par with the end of the Cretaceous.<br \/>\nWe are witnessing the birth of a world<br \/>\nthat cannot hope to sustain us.<br \/>\nA millennia-long harvest of dust<br \/>\nafter a century of sewing the skies with poison.<\/p>\n<p>Leaves fall, but it grows no cooler.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Leaves fall, as do Empires, in the fullness of time.
