i would have loved to grown up a better person. this is not<\/span><\/p>\n

a personal offense. merely an observation of the fact that<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

girlhood never seemed to suit me well. i was always too<\/span><\/p>\n

loud too out there too much too needy too much want<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

i have been hard to handle and harder still to keep. i <\/span><\/p>\n

do not believe this was my fault. girlhood struck me <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

right beneath the jaw. taught me to wear pretty dresses<\/span><\/p>\n

and think pretty thoughts. i spent my formative years<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

consuming numerous vampire novels – i cannot help<\/p>\n

myself; i have always been a lover of the flesh<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

and a sucker for all things rancid. girlhood says<\/p>\n

this is symbolic: girlhood says it is no wonder<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

a girl as self-absorbed as i am would love<\/p>\n

tales of violence and horror, of taking<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

all you believe to be yours. we become that which we consume;<\/p>\n

and i, by god, consumed a lot of it.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

pretty girls do not spend their teenage years <\/span><\/p>\n

squirming in the basement, but i did it anyway.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

girlhood tries to keep me skinny and well-mannered:<\/p>\n

i tell girlhood to go suck it<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

one day, a sexy vampire lady will take me to her<\/p>\n

castle, and i will get what is mine.<\/p>\n
